Bridgend College: Student Support

Student Services

Bridgend College Student Services at our Bridgend Campus is located in Block A behind Reception, and on our Pencoed campus is located in Block O/T, Teaching Block behind Reception.  The Student Services team provides guidance, information and support, enabling your student experience to be both rewarding and as problem-free as possible.

The team consists of staff who can provide course advice and information regarding student transport, financial assistance, student meal subsidiaries, progression opportunities such as employment, voluntary work or Higher Education, welfare and counselling sessions.  Whatever your question, enquiry or problem we are here to help and support you.

Student Services is open throughout the year: Monday to Thursday 8.30am - 5pm and Friday 8.30am - 4.30pm

 

Careers Guidance

Careers guidance and information is provided by Careers Wales Mid Glamorgan & Powys.

There are advisers based at the Bridgend campus library and Pencoed campus in the teaching block.  The advisers work with adults and young people and give impartial guidance appropriate to individual needs.

Childcare

If you are a parent of a young child wishing to continue your education you need the reassurance that they are being cared for in a happy and secure environment.  The Bridgend College Day Nursery provides this safe haven for children to play, learn, eat and sleep.  It is a 100 place nursery for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years.  A Playscheme is also run during school holidays (except Christmas) catering for children aged 4-13 years.

The Specialist Support Centre

At Bridgend College we have a dedicated Specialist Support Centre which offers help and support for any student who has any Additional Needs or Disability.  The Centre offers an initial assessment of your needs, with the appropriate ongoing support, guidance or Assistive Technology where needed.  All staff are qualified in their specialist areas to ensure a first class service is on offer to any student who needs this additional help.

The services on offer comprise:

  • Sight Loss Service
  • DSA (Disabled Student Allowance) Assessment Service for HE students

Weston House

In 1978 Bridgend College was the first FE College in Wales to open a residential facility for students with disabilities, known today as “Weston House”.

Weston House offers twenty four hour care and curriculum provision for young people aged 16-25.  Its main aims are to promote independence, further social and education opportunities and to equip young people with the appropriate skills necessary for the transitionto adulthood.

In 2009, Weston House was treated to a make over! A single storey extension featuring a spectacular central glass atrium has been built to provide: new facilities that now allow Weston House to offer care to 32 residents with additional needs and/or disabilities, including for the first time young people from the boroughs of Bridgend.

Weston House is regulated under the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW).

Student Welfare/Child Protection

The College understands that some students may have personal difficulties that they would like to discuss with specially trained staff, our Student Welfare and Child Protection Officers are able to offer a range of services to all students on all campuses.

They can help with the following welfare issues: -   

  • Relationship issues
  • Homelessness
  • Substance misuse
  • Bullying
  • Signposting to specialist agencies

The Student Welfare / Child Protection Officers are available by appointment or drop-in basis and cover Bridgend and Pencoed campuses.

Counselling Service

The College understands that some students may have personal difficulties that they would like to discuss with specially trained staff.  The College provides a Counselling Service with qualified Counsellors on a completely confidential basis.  Our counsellors can help you cope and deal with issues such as depression, bereavement, relationship problems and anger management, amongst others.

This service is available to all students enrolled at any of our five campuses.  An appointment can be made via the Student Welfare / Child Protection Officers, contact numbers as follows: -
