Bridgend College: 21st Century Village

21st Century Learning Campuses...

Bridgend College's Capital Development programme is now nearing its conclusion!

This year we've been given an incredible opportunity to take this College into the 21st Century in so many more areas.

Across three campuses we've built new state of the art Learning Resource Centres, Student Common Rooms, Refectories, Hair and Beauty Salons and a Higher Education Learning Centre at Queens Road. As well as this our new 400 seat multi-purpose Lecture Theatre is on target for early 2011.

NEW Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

To support your studies, our LRC and Library at our Bridgend and Pencoed campuses have been expanded, providing you with a range of learning materials and research facilities, reference books relating to your course, periodicals and magazines, and a suite of open access computers to assist you with your research on the internet, you will find the LRC a useful place to visit.

Our new, state of the art LRC is located in G Block on our Bridgend Campus. It's two dedicated floors, offering the very best in learning and study resources, to our students. The ground floor includes an extensive library, open access networked computers and quiet areas for personal study. Whilst, the first floor has designated areas for classrooms and exams, Essential Skills support services and our award winning Learndirect provision.

NEW Student Common Room Facilities

Last year we asked our students for their ideas and opinions about how they wanted the new student common rooms to look and feel. We took all ideas into consideration and we feel our new Student Common Rooms both at Pencoed and on the first floor of A Block, at our Bridgend Campus, will meet the social requirements of our ever growing, diverse student population.

You will have access to:

  • A large 'relaxation' area
  • A quiet room
  • Student Union Meeting Room

NEW Intuition Hair and Beauty Salon

Our brand new state of the art, designer Hair Salon and a new Wellbeing Holistic and Beauty Centre is now open, to provide the students training at the college with an excellent opportunity to work in Industry standard facilities.

Glass circular walls and aubergine colours ensures the required 'Wow factor', ensuring that Bridgend College Salons are a leading destination for clients in the locality, looking for pampering, styling and relaxation.

Quality Coordinator, Angela Powell said:  "It is incredible how working in first class salons has such an impact on the teaching and learning within this section. With mood lighting and music and restful colour schemes within the wellbeing centre, the students and clients can have relaxing and professional treatment sessions throughout the week."

Within the new salons - massage, make up, facials, holistic therapies, nail treatments and hair styling and colouring are available to staff and the public.

Head of School, Jane Wattleworth explained: "Every detail in the project has been thought out - the Hair Salon was designed and installed by L'Oreal approved designers. The Beauty Salons have had designer furniture and restful waiting areas. All contribute to a fantastic teaching and learning experience and rightly reflect the high standard of tuition offered by our professional lecturers within the Hair, Beauty and Holistic Department."

NEW Multi-purpose Lecture Theatre/Performance Hall

This is on schedule for completion at the start of 2011. The ground floor will include a full stage and 312 tiered seats, all of which can be easily withdrawn to further open up the space. The remaining 104 seats, again tiered, will be installed on the first floor.

Whilst this space will primarily be for the use of the Department of Performing Arts, whose current theatre space is severely limited, the new facility will also be available for college wide activities, such as student induction, school meetings, guest speakers and student shows.

The theatre will also be available to community groups, the only facility of its kind within Bridgend, at weekends and during holiday periods for a nominal fee.
